Vladimir
Kagan is one
of the 20th century's pre-eminent modern furniture designers.
His designs from the forties, fifties, and sixties have become
icons of mid-century Modern and have been a major influence on
many of the designers who followed him.
His work is collected by connoisseurs and museums throughout the
world and is in the permanent collections of the, The Cooper Hewitt
Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institution the Metropolitan
Museum and The Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, The Victoria
& Albert Museum - London, Vitra Design Museum and Die Neue Samlung
in Germany, The Chicago Athenaeum, San Francisco's MOMA and in
Geneva The Petit Palais. His works as been exhibited at the Museum
of Modern Art and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Private
collectors of his work include Donna Karen, Tom Ford, Andy Warhol,
Robert Mapplethorpe, Frank Sinatra, Isaac Stern and David Lynch.
The New York Times wrote "Vladimir Kagan is famous for his enormous
kidney shaped couches and his wooden chairs and tables with boomerang
curves. He puts a sensual touch on the cool modern style of the
period. While collectors and museum curators have long appreciated
the Kagan esthetic, a new generation of downtown hipsters, young
people who have made it in entertainment, fashion, art and media,
are feathering their nests with Mr. Kagan's James Bond-meets-the-Jetsons
furniture."
Kevin Stayton, curator of design and decorative arts at the Brooklyn
museum says, "The two things one wants from a designer are personal,
artistic expression and a connection to his time. Kagan has both."
"Vladimir Kagan is in fact a living legend," says Richard Buckley
in his article for House and Garden Magazine.
The first Kagans appeared in 1947, but his work will go well into
the 21st Century, continuing to define the term modern.
